Welcome
to The Depot, where Atlanta's Rail Road History and Future Meet, along
with Great Food, Awesome Atmosphere and Friendly People.
A
revolving door, though not original to the building, provides a unique
portal to Atlanta's rich rail road history as well as to a fun, casual
dining experience. Keeping with the character and feel of the
period, many architectural details grace all areas of this historic
setting.
Notable
design elements include restored sliding cargo-bay doors which adorn
the walls, original brick tiles, an expanded platform used for deck
dining with a scenic skyline view as well as old railroad tracks used
as foot rests on the rich wood bar which spans the length of the dining
room.
Original ticket windows now serve as a unique place to enjoy a cold
beverage as you sit opposite of the inside bar. Meticulous design,
rich history, great food and friendly people make The Depot not just
a restaurant, but an must-see and enjoyable destination.
The
Depot, a former freight depot constructed by the Atlanta & West
Point Rail Road about 1900, is one of the few remnants of Atlanta’s
proud railroad history within the city limits.
The Atlanta & West Point Rail Road dates back to 1857 when locomotives
ran between Atlanta and West Point. It was one of the railroads that
brought Atlanta back to life after the Civil War, making Atlanta the
transportation and business center of the Southeast by the 1890s.
The Depot is one of the depots constructed to serve area industries.
Completed in 1905, the Belt Line, a 22-mile loop of railroad track,
was used until the1960s when it was abandoned because of the trucking
business. This depot stopped accepting freight about the same time and
served as storage for old documents and records.
The
Depot patio overlooks the remnants of the Belt Line, which is on the
drawing boards to become a transformative project in the next 25 years.
The 22-mile loop will be turned into a transit greenway with streetcars,
bicycle and pedestrian paths and hundreds of acres of new parks that
will connect more than 40 of Atlanta’s historic intown neighborhoods.
Atlanta’s railroad past is becoming part of its future and The
Depot is the first stop. All aboard!
Award
Winning Design:
Atlanta, Georgia, June 25, 2008 – The Depot is the latest
recipient of the Best Adaptive Use Award by Atlanta's Urban Design Commission
at its annual Awards of Excellence ceremony. The restaurant was originally
a historic brick rail center with a red tile roof which sat vacant for
over fifty years until William Jay George of G6 Design and Peace Design
meticulously restored it.
